Writing Software as a Kaizen Event

posted by KodefuGuruKodefuGuru 578 days, 23 hours, 26 minutes ago
Friday, October 21, 2011 8:22:36 AM GMT
In the past, most developers’ approach to code is that you should write it once and hopefully never have to debug or revisit it again. This stems from the traditional waterfall approach of software development where we were trying to completely describe the entire system up front perfectly. Change was bad and bugs were not accounted for and left for the end. The Agile movement ushered in the first change to this mentality. Agile introduced the concept of refactoring, or writing your software once and t... (more)

Although the command prompt has fallen out of vogue in the past few years, developers and power users alike invoke cmd when a job calls for finesse. Command line support is also essential for many scripting and automation languages, such as MSBuild. JustDecompile has the ability to export code directly from the command prompt. (more)

A few professors from Stanford University are performing an experiment in distributed education by offering three computer science classes for free. There are many educational materials out there if you want to learn, but this is a good way to push yourself and be graded on your work. If you want to check it out without committing, the basic level version is like the advanced but without the test taking... (more)

Avoid Parallel Hierarchies

published 600 days, 14 hours, 5 minutes ago posted by KodefuGuruKodefuGuru 601 days, 1 hour, 15 minutes ago

In Implementation Patterns by Kent Beck, he mentions a use of inheritance that can be particularly troublesome: parallel hierarchies. He uses an example of this from an insurance system. As shown in the image above, each subclass from one hierarchy requires one from the other hierarchy. This leads to class explosion! As you can imagine, it’s even worse when there are more than two hierarchies interacting in this manner. Here’s how the skeleton C# code for the example might look:public abstract class ... (more)

Empowering Enums

When reading Steve Smith’s articles on enums on ASP.NET Alliance and his blog, I couldn’t help but think of a different approach to the issue. I’ve seen, used, and coded the enum class pattern before (and it works well), but we have new language features today to encourage reuse and empower true enums. I am going to show you techniques that won’t require significant changes to your code if you have an existing base of enums... (more)

One of the things previewed at the BUILD Day 2 Keynote was ASP.NET MVC 4, and Microsoft wasted no time in releasing a preview for developers to begin using. I haven’t gone through the preview entirely, but there are a couple of features I should note. First, the default template actually looks good now. I’m not a UI designer, and for my custom websites I always feel like it somehow looks rather plain. With this template, I at least feel as though my site doesn’t look dated. Another really cool featu... (more)

Windows 8 brings a style of applications familiar to us using Windows Phone known as Metro. Although Metro Windows Phone apps were built in Silverlight, many predicted the demise of Silverlight since early previews of Windows 8 focused solely on HTML5 support. The keynote of the BUILD conference dispelled this notion by presenting us a full picture of the applications supported in Windows 8. Windows 8 supports applications that run on Windows 7. It also supports the new style of applications even usin... (more)

Ted Neward goes through a code kata with several programming paradigms in the latest Working Programmer column. Being a coding polyglot is all the rage nowadays, and understanding multiple paradigms is essential to being a well-rounded developer. Ted goes through procedural style, modifies it to be object-oriented, demonstrates how to use meta and then dynamic programming. Finally, he makes it more functional. The proposed solution adds an aspect of functional programming, but it can be taken further... (more)

Understanding the Microsoft Shift on Silverlight and HTML5

As the old proverb goes, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. That must be Microsoft’s mantra as it prepares to unveil a new strategy for Windows development at BUILD. It’s hard to fathom that only four years have passed since Microsoft originally introduced Silverlight, but in that short period the world- and Microsoft- have clearly changed. With the rising HTML5 sun on the horizon, Microsoft is signaling a new dawn to its legion of developers. Microsoft overstepped with Silverlight and HTML5 is the correc... (more)

I was driving down the road to pick up dinner when a familiar tune came on the radio. I usually listen to music on my Windows Phone, but I had forgotten to put it in my pocket before I left. The song started out with an electronic voice saying “cowboy… cowboy.” Since I grew up in the 90s, I decided to turn it up for nostalgic purposes. Back in the 90s, I was a certified cowboy coder. Even in 2000 when I started working on a team project, the team and the product had little to no discipline. Requirements... (more)

In A Brief Introduction to Fundamental OOP, I built a small twitter application. It does the job well, but it has a very undesirable quality. When you click the search button, the application momentarily freezes as it waits for the Twitter service to respond. The application would feel a lot smoother if it allowed the user to continue using the application while the request is processed... (more)
