Users in the Telerik Reporting Forums have been clamoring for a Stand-Alone Report Designer for a long time now. I’ve been working with Telerik Reporting for the past few years, which means I have spent my share of time researching issues in the forum. I have seen several posts by users asking for a Report Designer that doesn’t require Vi... (more)

Asynchronous programming in C# 5

One of the more radical design decisions in the forthcoming Windows Runtime is that no API may, even potentially, take more than 50 milliseconds to complete. Operations that could take longer than that will instead have a 'kick off this operation' API that returns immediately without waiting for the result of the operation. Discover how this will change how .NET developers write code and what C# 5 includes to take advantage of this new focus on Async. (more)

State of the Decompiler

Shortly after I joined Telerik at the beginning of 2011, one of my favorite free tools was yanked from the marketplace. It was unimaginable that it would disappear leaving the .NET community without a free decompiler. It wasn’t as simple as it no longer being support either: it had a time bomb. This meant that you would either pay up or no longer have access to the software. Around this time, we recently added a decompilation engine to Telerik JustCode and decided to turn it into a standalone product (s... (more)

RedMonk has released a ranking of programming languages based on their popularity on StackOverflow and GitHub. The buzz seems to be focused on Java, which is surprising since C# left it in the dust on features. C# is still beating it in most places, but Java and a few other top tier languages have it edged out on GitHub projects. I assume this is because many C# projects are hosted on CodePlex. One interesting outlier is Rust. It appears to be popular for creating OSS projects, but there isn't a correla... (more)

Mango12 created an interesting competition to kick off the New Year, and I decided to try it out. It’s a simple task along the lines of a code kata, and I recommend you try it yourself before looking over my solution. Task: Compress a list of words into the shortest string that contains all words. Test: “testing”, “ginger”, “german”, “minutes” should become “minutestingingerman” Here is my approach: create a weighted graph connecting each term then recursively reduce the highest weighted edges. The t... (more)
