Checking if a Remote File Exists - Kirupa Chinnathambi

If you are going to be performing any action on a file, you want to make sure the file exists first. This is easier for files stored locally on your machine where you can simply do a File.Exists call and...call it a day.Things are a little bit more tricky when you try to check if a remote file such as something on a HTTP server exists though. Given the nature of requests traveling over a network, there are two things to keep in mind that make performing this check non-trivial (more)

Blend 3 introduced the idea of Triggers, Actions and Behaviors as a way in which a developer can package up functionality for re-use by a designer in a drag-drop manner. The way I think of them in my head;Action – piece of code that does some single thing.Trigger – piece of code that causes some Actions to run at “some point”.Behavior – piece of code that attaches itself to some other object and does something with it. Anything. One of the things that my slightly-too-detailed-obsessed brain struggles t... (more)

This is the twenty-eighth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the VS 2010 and .NET 4 release. This blog post continues a series of posts I’m doing that cover the new improvements we made around web deployment.  In my first post in the deployment series I provided an overview of the new VS 2010 Web Deployment features. In today’s post I’m going to be discussing Microsoft Web Deploy – which is a free server technology that enables a comprehensive publishing and deployment mechanism.Web Deploy enable... Please note that comments and discussion for published tutorials iStock_WhiteBoardSmallPartialIn the previous tutorial we looked at binding data to fields on a Windows Phone 7 page. In this tutorial we take the next step and create a list on a first page and then display the details on a second page. This turns out to be shockingly easy to do, but along the way we’ll uncover some other useful controls and a few subtle features. (more)

This gives you a basic way of getting data out of the system to create reports or do further analysis on the data using Excel. However, in business applications you typically want to provide some client-side reporting that also formats the data in a certain way so it can be printed easily. Microsoft Word is a great tool for this. (more)

The .NET Micro Framework Hardware for Software People - Scott Hanselman

I'm definitely a software person. I took EE in school and made an LED class, then a small computer like everyone else, and I know my volts and my amps for the most part, but that's about it. The limits of my skills are somewhere around adding an LED and some resistors to leech power off a USB adapter (which I recently did while working on the Hanselcade retro arcade build).I look at hardware guys like Clint Rutkas in awe. I mean, seriously, who builds a T-shirt cannon from scratch for fun? AmazingC... (more)

Blend Bits 2 Learn a Few Keyboard Shortcuts - Mike Taulty

My second tip on Blend is to learn a few keyboard shortcuts. It’s not that hard. Honest. I don’t mean that you have to sit down and religiously learn them all. There’s quite a lot and they’re well documented in the help ( Blend Help is good by the way ) and there’s even a menu option to jump straight to them; which drops you out here; Now I’m naturally lazy and so I wasn’t going to sit down and learn all of these but I learnt a few and the ones that I learnt are mostly from the Artboard, Pen tool ... I add a Button to that top left (0,0) grid cell by selecting the button control over on my “Tools” window and then drawing a Button within the grid cell or by just double-clicking in the grid cell then I get a Button; but I also get something that I hadn’t bargained for. Margins.I’m not sure whether there’s a super-smart way around this but I often find in Blend that I’m checking the Layout area of the Properties panel to see whether I’ve end... (more)

Multi-touch Water Effects in WPF and Silverlight

I’ve found that creating water effects that respond interactively and smoothly is not really something easy to do in WPF or Silverlight.  However because a project required it I trudged forward managed to get it working pretty nicely – buttery smooth and low CPU utilization. The results can be seen in the video, but the reasons it wasn’t easy may be interesting to WPF/Silverlight developers so I’ll mention why... (more)

Sometimes you’re so busy designing, coding, testing, and supporting a product that you don’t take the time to stop and appreciate what you have actually accomplished. A customer of ours asked us to create a video overview of our Silverlight functionality and in doing so we had to step back and say “wow”, this is pretty cool. It truly is easy to use EntitySpaces to create a Silverlight application as you will see. (more)
