An interesting discussion broke out in the comments to the blog post on Never Mind the Bullets during the weekend over my allegedly loose usage of the term HTML5 to describe the site. 682383_55089219Here’s the problem: while strictly HTML5 refers to a draft specification published by the W3C, HTML5 is increasingly being used (particularly in the media) as a generic term to describe the web platform that is built on an emerging generation of web standards. In this context, the term is used as a catch-all... (more)

Debunking another myth about value types Fabulous Adventures In Coding - Eric Lippert

Tuesday, October 12, 2010 2:27:34 PM GMT Monday, October 11, 2010 4:43:35 PM GMT
Here's another myth about value types that I sometimes hear: "Obviously, using the new operator on a reference type allocates memory on the heap. But a value type is called a value type because it stores its own value, not a reference to its value. Therefore, using the new operator on a value type allocates no additional memory. Rather, the memory already allocated for the value is used.".. (more)

Deploying Silverlight assemblies via NuPack - Tim Heuer

It’s a pretty cool mechanism for getting .NET libraries. For other open source developers this concept isn’t something new (i.e., gems). But for .NET developers it might be because it is a difference from the way we typically have received dependent and 3rd party assemblies for our projects. It provides a PowerShell script mechanism for adding packages as well as the well-known “Add Reference” gesture for VS developers. (more)

We think NuPack will be a fundamental component of the .NET stack going forward.  It will encourage more .NET developers to use open-source libraries.  Having a standard package manager integrated into millions of copies of Visual Studio will hopefully also encourage the creation of more open source projects with .NET. NuPack is a free open source package manager that makes it easy for you to find, install, and use .NET libraries in your projects. It works with all .NET project types ... (more)

Making parallel code easier to use is an important development but making it easier also means you can use it without realising what you are getting into. Unless we can find a way of making parallel code both easy and safe you are still going to have to take care - even with the easy-to-use Parallel For. (more)
