If you work with XAML day in and day out then surely you will have your own tips/tricks for working inside of Visual Studio 2010. Here are mine. I hope that you find them useful. Tip #1 When Double Clicking on a .XAML File go directly to the XAML View and collapse the Design split view. I find it annoying how the design view opens up every time you double click on a .XAML file. I like to create my UI inside of Expression Blend instead of Visual Studio. For instance, I get the following screen when I d... (more)

C#/.NET Fundamentals: Of Lambdas and LINQ

This is a quick presentation I threw together for a group of developers who requested a quick primer on using lambda expressions and the more common LINQ extension methods.  It seemed like a good general knowledge presentation so I decided to upload it to slideshare and reference it here as well. This is not meant to be a comprehensive discussion of everything that lambda expressions and LINQ have to offer, but is just sort of a very basic introduction. (more)

Creating an English-like Math DSL

The answer to life, the universe, and everything is well-known as 42. There are a myriad of questions that lead to this answer, and my favorite is perhaps the percent of leet pi. I wanted to be able to write this in C# as close to English as possible. Since I had no way to write my own keywords, the closest I could devise was the following bit of code.double percent = 0.01; var answer = percent.Of().Leet().Pi(); The tricky part here is deciding what to do about the Of() method. It represents an operati... (more)

Microsoft Test Manager - Test Runner–Playback error with C:\fakepath

When executing a test case with Microsoft Test Runner with a step where you have to select a file in a web application, you get “C:\fakepath” for the location of the file you selected. For example in step 4 you need to select an image from the local disk. When you replay this action you get the c:\Fakepath folder. For sure this ruins the fat forward for you test case. (more)

All sequences have a notional order that can be expressed using index values in a similar manner to the indexes of an array. When projecting sequences using LINQ's Select and SelectMany operators, this index value can be included in the projection. (more)

I recently added a partial contact view to my MVC3 project and thought I’d share since I did basically this same post over a year ago with the original MVC. I stopped using the Castle Validation because I’ve found that the MVC3 stuff is working for me now. I also am not using fluentHtml anymore because MVC3 uses that style now. (more)

Sharing validation code between a WPF client, a WCF Service and Entity Framework 4.1 using data annotations by Alex van Beek

Recently Entity Framework 4.1 was released. 4.1 contains a DBContext class, which is largely a wrapper around the ObjectContext class with a simplified API. Now you might think as I did: “But if I’m comfortable with the ObjectContext class and I don’t use code first, why in the world would I need a DbContext?”. The answer is pretty simple. The DbContext has a feature which simply isn’t supported by the ObjectContext: data validation with the attributes from the System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations names... (more)

In my previous post that I did yesterday, I discussed about the Multiple Windows Support in Silverlight 5 Beta and there I mentioned that though it is a wonderful feature but there are some things that I didn't like. Though it is still in beta, so it is currently in development stage and may be the team is working on it. Let's read the post to know the points those I didn't like or want in the future versions. Those are my personal opinions only and looking forward to see them implemented in future rele... (more)

The internal build 1 of JustCode comes with three new refactorings to easily manipulate method parameters.Move to Parameter There are times when one has hardcoded a constant value within the body of a method, but the method would have more flexibility if the value were a parameter instead. This refactoring allows you to move the variable to a parameter, and it will automatically update calls to the method... (more)

XNA for Silverlight developers: Part 11 - Tombstoning

An often discussed topic on Windows Phone 7 is that of “tombstoning”, which describes the process of your application being suspended and removed from the running processes (think hibernate) to free resources on the phone. The application can be “revived” later when the user navigates back to it. It’s the developer’s responsibility to create a user experience that gives the appearance of a seamless transition between applications even when tombstoning happens. For games, the basic concept is the same as ... (more)

In the previous three blog posts I’ve shown how to filter and display data with ASP.NET Web Forms. Now I’m doing the same with ASP.NET Web Pages. You will see how to filter and display data by using Microsoft Web Matrix, ASP.NET Web Pages, and Razor. During the early days of ASP.NET there was a free tool named ASP.NET WebMatrix to create Web applications. This was at a time before there was a free edition of Visual Studio. Nowadays there’s an Express edition of Visual Studio that gives much more options... (more)
