One of the more prominent pieces of UI that makes up your Application Bar is the series of buttons and their icons housed under what is affectionately dubbed the ApplicationBarIconButton: Since most of us do not have icons that look similar to this handy, to help you out, the Windows Phone Developer Tools install a handful of icons that you can just use. You can find them here: {Program Files}\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Icons To go even further in making life easy for you, if you use Expression Bl... (more)

This comes directly from something that I was doing today with Blend. Let’s imagine that I have a UI like this one and I have it set such that when my mouse enters the scene, that little grid at the bottom animates in from the bottom and when my mouse leaves the scene it animates out;I put this together in the simplest way possible. My layout looks like this;and the sneaky thing is that I have 3 rows rather than 2. That bottom row is set to size 0.When the mouse leaves the control, I move t... (more)

When you spend a lot of time, like I do, using the Razor View Engine in MVC 3 you’ll find yourself constantly looking up helper parameters. I’ve decided to put together this guide to help me, and others, to code more quickly and efficiently. This is part one of an n-part series involving all html helpers contained in MVC 3. This is Part 2 of my Helper Guide. (more)

In my last post, I explained how to host Mono’s C# Compiler As A Service in your .NET applications. In this post, we’ll explore this a bit further, and see how to leverage Mono’s compiler as a service for implementing some dynamic querying features in your .NET applications. Read my first post How To Host Mono’s C# Compiler as a Service in your .NET Application if you missed it. I’m not sure why Microsoft doesn’t have a standard on these things and it’s funny to hear marketing teams argue the benefit of one name over the other. For what it is worth, in my eyes, if it isn’t a major milestone release (or at least a ‘dot’ release [4.0->4.1 for example] then it is a service update. Call it a GDR, Wave X, Service Pack, R2, blah blah.In the GDR1 release (version 4.0.50826.0) we also released an update to the SDK. This is where it can start get confusing…allow me to attempt to expla... (more)

Continuous Integration Tip #2 – Using App_offline.htm in your build

Deploying in an automated fashion using Continuous Integration doesn’t happen instantly, and depending on the size of your application, your continuous integration deployment can get caught in a state of unknown/in-between if a user visits your application half way through deployment. This can be far from optimal, but ASP.Net has a trick up it’s sleave in the form of the App_offline.htm file. (more)

This is very simple to implement in ASP.NET. But, there are possibilities to get problems in exporting to excel from grid view. When you bind data to gridview and write some logic to export to excel then it will not be enough. We have to check or write some additional logic which will help us to solve the problems. Below is the explanation for all problems we may get in the complete process along with detailed solution. You may e... (more)

Microsoft has a video series to help developers get started with Windows Phone 7. Here’s the first by Nancy Strickland. This video gets you set up with the developer tools and shows you how to build your first application. If you’re familiar with Visual Studio, it’s amazingly simple to build and debug WP7. If you haven’t seen it yet, the coolest thing in my opinion is the windows phone emulation. As explained in the video, the grab handles are slightly larger than the visuals because it represents the... (more)

This morning Microsoft released a security update that addresses the ASP.NET Security Vulnerability that I’ve blogged about this past week.  We recommend installing it as soon as possible on your web-servers. Common Questions/Answers Below are some answers to a few common questions people have asked: Do the updates require me to change any code?
