WPF Charting Performance Comparisons (the Battle Continues) | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

This blog post presents a thorough analysis of the performance of various WPF Charting components. The results show that a new class of charting solutions, which use raster-based graphics as opposed to retained mode vector graphics, provide a considerable performance advantage. Introduction Readers of my blog will know that charting and performance are two things that interest me greatly. One of the first things I did back in 2009 when I started working with WPF and Silverlight was have a go with the M... (more)

Windows Phone 7 – Browsing your Photos via Bing Maps | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

The Windows Phone 7 camera gives you the option to record the location where a picture was taken (under Settings => applications => pictures+camera). With this feature turned on, each application has their latitude, longitude and altitude stored as part of the standard EXIF data. I thought it would be fun to combine the previous blog post I wrote on pushpin clustering with the photos on my camera, to allow me to explore them via a Bing Maps control. With not much more than 100 lines of code I came up wit... (more)

Adding Error Bars to Visiblox Silverlight Charts | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

Having spent a number of years studying Physics at university, I have had the importance of error bars well and truly drummed into me! Within physics, or any experimental science, there are always going to be errors in the measurements you make. The more repeat measurements you make, the more confident you can be in the mean value, however you cannot remove the errors altogether. Error bars provide a way to represent the spread of experimental observations graphically, without them, it is hard to have an... (more)

Paging Data from the Server with Silverlight | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

posted by FantasticMrFishFantasticMrFish 610 days, 7 hours, 19 minutes ago
Wednesday, October 19, 2011 3:11:24 PM GMT
This blog post provides an implementation of IPagedCollectionView which allows paging of data from the server. An IPagedDataSource is introduced that allows any paged data source to be plugged in, with the standard controls such as DataPager making it easy to create paging applications. With web-based applications, bandwidth constraints often mean that when querying large datasets, the results must be paged, i.e. split into discrete pages each containing a small number of results, with an API available ... WinRT Transitions – Creating Fast and Fluid Metro UIs | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

posted by FantasticMrFishFantasticMrFish 618 days, 11 hours, 43 minutes ago
Tuesday, October 11, 2011 10:47:44 AM GMT
This blog post looks at the new concept of ‘transitions’ that WinRT, within Windows 8, introduces. This concept makes it very easy for you to create a fluid and interactive UI without going anywhere near storyboards! I have to admit it, I am a big fan of the Metro Design Language; the clean chrome-free graphics, combined with typography inspired by signage and designed for maximum legibility, has given Windows Phone 7 an instantly recognisable style. However, whilst Silvelight applications developed for... (more)

A Windows Phone 7.1 (Mango) MVVM Tombstoning Example | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

posted by FantasticMrFishFantasticMrFish 624 days, 9 hours, 29 minutes ago
Wednesday, October 05, 2011 1:01:41 PM GMT
In this blog post I look at the new application lifecycle model that Windows Phone 7.1 (Mango) introduces, and show how to handle the various lifecycle events in a simple MVVM application. In a previous blog post I described the development of a simple Windows Phone 7 application using the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) pattern and how to handle application lifecycle events, specifically tombstoning. In this blog post I will look at updating this sample for Windows Phone 7.1 (Mango) to handle fast-app swit... (more)

This article show the step-by-step development of a Windows Phone 7 HTML5 application using PhoneGap. It also looks at how viable this approach is for cross-platform mobile development.Introduction … and Why HTML5? Windows Phone 7 allows native application development in both Silverlight and XNA, both of which are mature framework with excellent tool support. So why would you want to develop an application with HTML5 / JavaScript instead? Personally I think the only viable reason for doing this (other t... (more)

In this blog post I take a look at Windows 8 on the outside, from a user perspective; and on the inside, from a developer perspective to see how it will change the way we develop with Windows on tablets, smartphones and the desktop when it is released next year. In Anaheim, California, the Microsoft //build/ conference is drawing to a close. And as the attendees head for home, with their shiny new Samsung tablets under their arms, the news of Windows 8 and the impact it has on end-users and developers i... (more)

Can Microsoft ‘fix’ JavaScript and make HTML5 applications viable? | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

Microsoft’s recent change in stance over Silverlight, promoting HTML5 as “the only true cross-platform solution for everything”, seems to have sidelined Silverlight as a niche framework. This has understandably caused a great deal of upset and confusion in the .NET development community. Despite this, Microsoft are remaining steadfast and tight-lipped about their vision for tighter integration of HTML5 into Windows 8 (and as a result just how side-lined Silverlight will be), until the BUILD conference ne... We get a lot of great feedback from our customers on what features they would like to see and we try and use that feedback to inform our product roadmap. In the months since the last release the product team have been beavering away in the back room preparing a new release with some really exciting new features, so I thought it might be a nice idea to give you an idea of what’s in the pipeline. This blog post looks at how to to create a conversation view, mimicking the SMS messaging interface within Windows Phone 7. This post shows how we can select different DataTemplate for each item in an ItemsControl to achieve this effect. The Windows Phone 7 SMS messaging interface graphically illustrates between yourself and the other party by showing your messages as speech bubbles. Creating this view in your own application is not a straightforward process, with the template for each message being dep... (more)

Readers of my blog will probably have noticed that I have a keen interest in both charting and performance. My friends over at Visiblox have combined these both to create what is one of the fastest charts for WPF, Silverlight and Windows Phone 7, see my recent benchmark blog post for details. What’s more, this performance has been achieved without sacrificing API clarity; the Visiblox charts can be instantiated with concise and clean XAML or manipulated from code-behind. The guys at Visiblox told me t... (more)

Metro In Motion #8 – AutoCompleteBox Reveal Animation | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

When I started the Metro In Motion series, I thought I would probably post three or four articles and be done. However, every time I use my Windows Phone 7 I seem to spot a new ‘native’ fluid UI effect which I would like to use in my own code. Also, these posts have proven very popular, there appears to be a real developer ‘need’ for this sort of information. In this instalment of Metro In Motion I will show how to implement the fluid auto-complete effect that can be seen in the Windows Phone 7 email cl... (more)

This blog post details a simple metro-in-motion behaviour which reduces the Panorama control’s contents while the user slides from item-to-item so that they can really appreciate your fancy background graphic! For those of you who have not been following my Metro-In-Motion series, I’ll briefly recap. My aim is to provide an implementation of the ‘fluid’ UI transitions and effects seen in native Windows Phone 7 applications but absent from the Silverlight APIs. So far I have covered fluid list animations... (more)

This blog post shows how to implement tombstoning within a Windows Phone 7 application that following the Model-View-ViewModel pattern. I have to admit Windows Phone 7 tombstoning had me in a bit of a muddle for a while, so many places to store state, a confusing lifecycle and navigation model. Most of the blog posts I read either detailed tombstoning for non-MVVM applications, or described how to use or adapt an existing MVVM framework for the purposes of tombstoning.
