my previous post I discussed creating the database and tables for the Silverlight HVP configuration data.  All that was great, and worked just dandy until it was time to get the data from the database server to the application running on the client.“But,” I thought, “How hard can it be?”  I’ve done a few mini-tutorials… should be straight-forward… And it was… sorta.Getting Going The steps are pretty straight orward:Create an entity data model that corresponds to the t... A while ago, I did a blog post on creating an external facing Azure Worker Role endpoint, listening for incoming TCP connections. After doing that post, I had the idea of building a Windows Azure FTP server that served as a bridge to blob storage. Lack of time, other things to do, you name it: I did not work on that idea. Until now, that is. (more)

Atanas Hristov: Design Patterns – State Pattern

The is a behavioural pattern. The behaviour of object changes accordingly to its internal state. We move the logic to property "State" which has method Handle() and call this method. We change the behaviour of the object as we just switch the value of the "State" property. This is an exapmple of using the State pattern to implement a traffic light. (more)

One of the newest additions to the .NET 4 framework is MEF. MEF stands for the Managed Extensibility Framework and is the answer to your prayers if you are building an app that allows developers to extend its functionality by building plugins. MEF makes the task of loading assemblies and utilizing their functionality very simple. Before we go any further there are a few basic terms that you must understand before you start using MEF: The Catalog is responsible for loading assemblies. There are se... (more)

Piracy in .NET /Silverlight Code – Part 1 – Even when the code is obfuscated

This is going to be a series of posts where I am going to demonstrating how someone with little advanced knowledge in .NET can hack in to the code, and circumventing licensing logic. I know there are other ways to prevent this ,which I am not going to be discussing about. The usual assumption is that, if the code is obfuscated and signed , then it is close to impossible for someone to hack in to the code because the method names and variables are jumbled up, which would prevent someone from figuring wha... Optimize ASP.NET Membership Stored Procedures for greater speed and scalability Last year at Pageflakes, when we were getting millions of hits per day, we were having query timeout due to lock timeout and Transaction Deadlock errors. These locks were produced from aspnetUsers and aspnetMembership tables. Since both of these tables are very high read (almost every request causes a read on these tables) and high write (every anonymous visit creates a row on aspnet_Users), there were just way too many lo... Well, it seems the last post wasn’t too controversial. Let me try something that might be a bit more controversial. Heck, it might even get some people down right agitated with me but that’s OK, disagreement is a useful tool to drive clarity and understanding. I don’t like Test Driven Development. I don’t just not like it, I think it’s a bad idea. How’s that for an inflammatory statement? Probably gonna make the cool kids black ball me :) I don’t sp... (more)
