Sometimes it is necessary to load an element like a shape dynamically from an file, resource or directly from a string into the corresponding API classes. In Silverlight for Windows Phone 7 this can be done with the use of the XamlReader Class. This class can be found in the System.Windows.Markup namespace. With the use of this class it’s very easy to create in memory representations of XAML object you created in tools like expression blend. In my example I created an ellipsis with a gradient fill and ... (more)

Code Contracts (Part III): Evolution Code Contracts are continuously evolving. As an evidence, the team has recently released an extension for the Visual Studio editor. It allows you to see a code contract in a tooltip. However, this isn't exactly a direction of development that developers would like to see. The implementation of the Code Contracts library still isn't good enough. Many looking at the official forum are afraid to use contracts in production. And there are reasons. Now I'd like t... (more)

This post assumes you are familiar with basic MVVM concepts and RelayCommand/DelegateCommand In a lot of scenarios, you need to perform operations in an asynchronous way in your View Model. Order in Chaos: .NET Collections This is a review of the current available collection types in .NET Framework 4.0 Note that I don’t plan to explain all the history of the different collection. If a class is obsolete, that is enough information. The intention is to use this post as a reference when you need to decide which type of collection you should use. Also, I’m not going to give the complexity of each function. You can find such information in the relevant class documentation on MSDN. Anywa... (more)

Creating prototypes that convey what the application should present, how it should respond to user events, and the general flow of an application is made a whole lot easier with Sketchflow. Janet Perez joins John for a 2 part series on using Sketchflow to create rich interactive prototypes using Sketchflow. Janet shows how to create the project and add pages, buttons, and all of the elements you are familiar with already and create a work flow. The result is a more engaging prototype. (more)

It’s a pretty cool mechanism for getting .NET libraries. For other open source developers this concept isn’t something new (i.e., gems). But for .NET developers it might be because it is a difference from the way we typically have received dependent and 3rd party assemblies for our projects. It provides a PowerShell script mechanism for adding packages as well as the well-known “Add Reference” gesture for VS developers. (more)
