Blend Bits 15: The Data Store - Mike Taulty

There’s lots of data features in Blend to provide food for future posts but this post is about the data store that showed up in Blend 4. This is a fairly simple idea and I suspect that I’d use it more in the realm of a SketchFlow application than I would in a real application as I tend to see it as a way for a designer to store something outside of the underlying object model that they’re data-bound to and I’m not sure I’d want that to happen in a real application. Say I’m sketching a simple login scre... (more)

Sell your stuff online with a fully functional eCommerce store in less than an hour! I’m taking the challenge of building a fully functional eCommerce store, and putting it online. It’ll take less than an hour to get the basic thing up and running, and then it’s up to you how much time you spend making it beautiful! I'm going to use WebMatrix from Microsoft to build it. WebMatrix is available at http://www.microsoft.com/web/webmatrix. Go ahead and download it if you don't have it already. It's free, not... (more)

C# – Batch identity inserts « Daniel Wertheim

I’m currently building support for identity inserts in SisoDb where I need to let the database generate the ids and then assign them to the entities. To get better performance I want to batch up the inserts and sending them in a large chunk to the Sql-server and I want to make use of parameters to be protected from sql-injection attacks. You can of course use SqlBulkCopy but it will not let you get the generated identities so that you can assign them to your entities. (more)

This post provides details and code examples related to Microsoft WebMatrix (Beta). The code examples used in the WebMatrix Getting Started guide show you how to call methods using two different techniques. You can either call a method using positional parameters or named parameters. You can also use a combination of both, but in a specific way. Positional Parameters When you call a method using positional parameters, you pass the parameters in order as specified in the method declaration. You must in... (more)

In the past week I have shared code using the new jQuery Templating plugin to build a nested tree view. The web site is a WebMatrix site and I use some server-side classes to supply the data that drives the page. Today I wanted to walk through this a little because I think this is an important aspect of WebMatrix development. Just like a traditional Visual Studio ASP.NET web site the App_Code folder can contain custom classes. For ... (more)

This tutorial will look into using the Opacity property on the tiles to create smooth, natural looking transitions between tiles. For example, blending a dirt tile into a grass tile, a grass tile into a rock tile, etc. Below, on the left, is a screen shot of a grass and dirt tile without the use of an opacity mask. As you can see, the straight line does not make for a very real looking transition! On the right is the result with an opacity mask applied, making for a much more realistic transition.     ... This paper describes work that started during my internship at Microsoft Research in 2009. It presents a simple language extension for computation expressions that makes them even more useful in some reactive, concurrent and parallel programming models. Note that this is only a research project and there are currently no plans to support the extension in the F# language (although, if there will, eventually, be an open-source F# release, then you'll hear about the extension again...)
