In the previous part of this series, we've explored a typical usage of data caching - via a helper class that encapsulates the caching management. And also, we've covered one case of complex caching - file dependencies. In this third part, we will continue to explore the complex caching dependencies - SQL Cache Notification Dependencies. (more)

I had a reader email me the following question: “How do you create Speech Bubbles in Silverlight/WPF without adding any extra .dlls? Right off the bat, I know at least two ways to create the speech bubbles that look just like the ones in comic books. Using the Callout Shapes included with Blend 4. Using the free 3rd party control named FreeBubbles (I used this before Blend 4). Unfortunately, we cannot use either of these as they will both add extra .dll’s to the project. So why wouldn’t you want ... (more)

A few weeks ago I blogged about a Twitter / Bing Maps mashup that I had created for tracking snowfall in the UK via the #uksnow twitter hashtag. Last week I spotted a number of people in the uk who were using a new hashtag #ukfuel for tweeting fuel prices together with a postcode to indicate its geographic location. With a few tweaks I was able to modify my mashup to plot fuel prices instead of snowfall. Click the image below to visit the #ukfuel page and interact with the map: The colour of each fu... (more)

The .NET System.IO.Compression namespace provides two general purpose compressions streams –  DeflateStream and GZipStream. Both these compressions streams use popular compression algorithm which is similar to that used by the ZIP format. The difference is that GZipStream writes an additional protocol at the start and at the end which includes a CRC to detect  errors. The GZipStream also conforms to a standard recognized by other software. Both DeflateStream and  GZipStream allow reading and writing, w... (more)

In this short post I will show you how you can bind the list view control and get the selected value of the list view control using MVVM pattern. For this post I have added one list view control which hold the grid view control in it view and when item is selected in the grid view the selected item is shown at the end of the screen. In the Image 1the selected items are not shown ( only the label fields are shown) but in the Image 2 when user click on any of the item the detail is shown. Image 1 Here yo... (more)

Yesterday I was talking about IValidatableObject in DataAnnotations and how ASP.NET MVC 3 has direct support for it: ASP.NET MVC 3 Validation and IValidatableObject. I mentioned that you can use IValidatableObject for those validation rules that are based on the entire model. The example I showed ( with caveats ) was for validating that ConfirmPassword and Password were the same during user registration. I also mentioned that you c... (more)

How to Use Asynchronous Controllers in ASP.NET MVC2 & MVC3 - Aaron

he primary reason I added asynchronous methods to Quick and Dirty Feed Parser 0.3 was because I wanted to use QD Feed Parser in conjunction with asynchronous controllers in ASP.NET MVC3. MSDN has some excellent documentation which explains the ins and outs of asynchronous controllers in ASP.NET MVC, yet there aren’t many good examples of how to use it online. Given this, I thought I would make one. (more)
