This past Tuesday I had dinner with several of the Tampa area Silverlight crew at Champps and then headed over to the Microsoft offices and presented at the Tampa Silverlight User Group (Tampa SLUG). It was a nice evening where I got to see many familiar faces and show off several demos on Silverlight. I am always amazed at how many awesome developers there are in the Tampa Bay area … and many of them are very active in the community. As promised, I wrapped up the demos and the slide deck and included ... (more)

Earlier this morning, Scott Guthrieblogged about a new View Engine we’re developing for ASP.Net.  As many of my readers know, I joined the ASP.Net team back in October in 2009, and I’m really excited to finally be able to share what I have been working on for the past 8 months.  When I joined Microsoft, I was shown some early prototypes for this new syntax and over the course of the next 8 months, we developed it into the Beta we’re going to be releasing very s... Since I’ve given sessions about WCF Data Services in the past (when they were called ADO.NET Data Services) I wanted to reuse some of the Ajax examples I showed for my coming OData session. One of the things that have been changed lately were the scripts to use when you want to make Ajax calls to your Data Service. So I downloaded the new scripts and saw that the names of... (more)

One of the new features introduced in C# 4.0 is the dynamic keyword. So far I haven’t had much use for it, but lately I’ve discovered that it can be very useful when designing ASP.NET MVC views. It also has uses when interacting with COM APIs and other dynamic languages, but I’m going to focus on its use in MVC. (more)

ASP.NET MVC - Creating a DropDownList helper for enums Do the types you work with in your ASP.NET MVC models ever have enums? Mine do from time to time and I’ve found myself needing to render a dropdown list to allow the user to select the enum value. For the purposes of this post, I will be working with a Person class and a Color enum (I’ll direct you to some posts by my colleagues to help you decide whether you think Color makes a good enum: here, here and here), but we’ll go with it here :-)public ... John Papa invited me on to Silverlight TV to discuss a key premise of WP7: Silverlight Programmers are instant WP7 programmers. To demonstrate this, I created two applications side by side: a traditional Silverlight (Web) application and a WP7 application using the same code.I’ll go through this step by step here, so that you can see the details that went by a bit quickly in the video. I’ll also bring the two programs into even closer alignment… (more)

OK, first things first. Let’s assume that we have a string that contains a grammar that has already been rewritten into our “nice” form, where there are exactly two terms in every production rule. We can easily write a parser that analyzes such a string. I’ll make a dictionary that maps each rule onto a list of two-symbol productions. So the grammar:S: N NIL | S P P: + N N: 1 NIL | 2 NIL | 3 NIL is turned into the dictionary: S –> { (N, NIL), (S, P) } P –> { (+, N) } N –> { (1, NIL), (2, NIL), (... (more)
