Selenium 2 - Get Number of Rows in a Table I was recently browsing through some of the questions on StackOverflow and came across this question. The question was around how you would count the number of rows in a table using Selenium 2 and Python. If you need a bit of a background to Selenium 2, I have written a little about it before. Now although the question was about the Python API, I wanted to try and get it working using the C# API. It was a pretty basic question and I wasn't really workin... (more)

When you are developing Silverlight applications following the MVVM pattern, you will eventually run into the fact that you’ll have to create a base class for your viewmodel classes. This post will show how to create a useful base class for your viewmodel classes and also how to create a base class for your view classes, which a lot of developers don’t do. In the end, I will show how to wire everything up. (more)

This blog post shows just how easy it is to use Google Sky as a tile source for Bing Maps, bringing the universe to Windows Phone 7! Personally I think mapping is one of the most exciting forms of application for mobile devices – the fantastic imagery available from Bing and Google maps, coupled with GPS technology, results in some pretty amazing tools. As a Windows Phone 7 developer, I have spent a fair bit of time poking round the Silverlight Bing Maps APIs. A really cool feature of the Bing Maps co... (more)

You usually are in a web context if you are working with JSON, where JSON serialization almost always is encapsulated by the framework. You might accidentally come across scenarios where you want to serialize and deserialize JSON in a non-web context though. (more)

In this post I will show you how to create the custom splash screen for your Silverlight application. You have seen many software which use nice splash screen during loading of the software applications like Microsoft office, excel and many others. I have also created splash screen for my desktop applications which I have developed during my professional life. But I didn’t created any for the web application which I have developed in asp.net. In case you haven’t heard the latest WP7 Developers Tool update was released yesterday and contains a few goodies. First you need to go and grab the bits here. You can install them in any order, but I installed the WindowsPhoneDeveloperResourcesen-USPatch1.msp first. Then the VS10-KB2486994-x86.exe. They install silently. In other words, you would need to check Programs and Features and look in Installed Updates to see if they installed successfully. Like the screenshot below: Once you get ... (more)

Throughout the years where I have been working on WPF projects, I have seen a fair share of classes used as ViewModels (VM) that have been lacking in revealing their intended and proper usage, such that their resistance to maintenance is increased. I think that the following suggestions help to make ViewModels that still work well and are more explicit about their function... (more)

In this post, we see how to define specific actions to be executed before or after the execution of every call to a method in our code. This is also known as “intercepting” the execution of a method and is related to AOP (Aspect Oriented Programming). We will explore two different ways of achieving this. (more)

Interoperating C# with Dynamic Languages

Despite the fact that C# 4.0 supports dynamic binding using the dynamic keyword, it doesn’t go as far as to allow executing an expression described in a string at runtime such as:string expr = "2 * 4"; // We can't "execute" expr This is due to the fact that the code to translate a string to an expression tree requires a lexical and semantic parser. These are built into the C# compiler and so are not available as a runtime service. At runtime, C# only provides a binder – which instructs the DLR how to in... (more)

Some people love them, others absolutely hate them, but if you ask me one of the coolest features in ASP.Net MVC is the Data Annotations that you use to decorate your ASP.Net MVC classes for validation. But one of the coolest things that came along in .Net 4.0 was support for this across the whole framework – even outside of ASP.Net MVC! (more)
