If I could pick only one thing that a senior-level .NET developer should know, it would be Object-Oriented Programming (OOP). True, OOP is not .NET specific, and indeed I think at this point a senior developer on virtually any platform should be familiar with OOP, it’s especially important here in the .NET world. Read on to find out why I think OOP is so important and to get a quick introduction and refresher on the four major tenets of OOP. (more)

how to update and/or install fxcop 10 So we have all used FxCop before haven’t we? Well I found out, that my version was 9.x and it prompted with an available update! So Microsoft’s download page opened. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=6544 It only displays a small 1 kb file! a “readme.txt” file. That’s strange. So I checked again for an available download link, but ended up with the same readme file. (more)

AppHarbor is one of the hottest things to hit .NET since, well, just about ever. It packages up the entire app lifecycle of source control, build, deployment and hosting and makes it dead simple; in fact it couldn’t be easier. It then adds a comprehensive collection of add-ons to do everything from persisting data (MS SQL, MySQL, MongoDB) to caching services (Memcacher) to load testing (blitz). Here’s how to get up and running in only 5 minutes flat. (more)

Just after graduating, I hated legacy with the heat of a thousand suns. I felt unfortunate, having to work on old code, built using outdated technologies, while software is all about making new and shiny things. Right, guys? Those naïve expectations of a rookie got crumbled very soon. Legacy is a constant in our industry. You can try to ignore it as long as possible, but it's impossible to keep that up forever. Over the years, I have come to accept that. I even have been fully embracing it lately. ... (more)

SQL SERVER – Import CSV into Database – Transferring File Content into a Database Table using CSVexpress « Journey to SQLAuthority

One of the most common data integration tasks I run into is a desire to move data from a file into a database table.  Generally the user is familiar with his data, the structure of the file, and the database table, but is unfamiliar with data integration tools and therefore views this task as something that is difficult.  What these users really need is a point and click approach that minimizes the learning curve for the data integration tool.  This is what CSVexpress (www.CSVexpress.com) is all about!  ...
