MVC and the HTML5 Application Cache HTML5 has loads of awesome features and recently I have been playing around with a feature called the Application Cache. The Application Cache is designed to allow you to run your web application offline - that is, without a network connection. A web browser that implements HTML5 offline applications will read the list of URLs from the manifest file, download the resources, cache them locally, and automatically keep the local copies up to date as they change. When... (more)

Whether we like it or not, HTML5 is all the rage now days. With the recent news on “code name” Windows 8’s upcoming support for HTML5 and JavaScript that hype has intensified even more. I’m personally in favor of what HTML5 brings to the table although I do worry about browser compatibility issues that will naturally crop up. Compatibility issues are something that Web developers have been dealing with since the days of Netscape 4 (layers) and IE4 (divs) though so it’s really nothing new; it’s just inten... (more)

You can’t go anywhere online these days without reading something about the new web standard: HTML5. HTML5, the latest version of the hyper-text mark-up language, enables a better web experience, with richer graphics, animation and web multimedia. Many pundits see it as the next generation web – web 3.0 if you like – and an open standard replacement for propriety plug-ins, Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash. With so much hype surrounding HTML5, and the benefits it brings, there’s one major question th... (more)

HTML5 and CSS3 in Dreamweaver CS5.5 – Part 1: Building the web page | Adobe Developer Connection - David Powers

Dreamweaver CS5.5 incorporates native support for the new HTML5 structural elements and many of the CSS3 properties supported by the latest browsers. Some of these features were introduced in the 11.0.3 updater for Dreamweaver CS5, but they have been significantly enchanced in Dreamweaver CS5.5. For example, there are new tools that make it easy to apply CSS rounded corners and drop shadows while seeing the results in Live view. Dreamweaver CS5.5 now has support for alpha transparency using RGBa or HSLa ... (more)

I was in Belgium and The Netherlands this last week presenting and talking to folks in the community. After I presented on ASP.NET MVC 3, HTML5 and jQuery, one fellow came up after and said, "Should I use Silverlight or HTML5. I don't understand what Microsoft's strategy is or what to use in my app." Since I work for the Web Platform and Tools team (ASP.NET, IIS, etc) I spend a lot of time working, coding, and thinking about the web. However, I'm not an official strategist, or marketing guy.  But I do h... (more)

When meeting current and prospective clients the subject of web technology choice often arises. There has been a great deal of confusion and uncertainty out there, even before Microsoft’s perceived change of stance with respect to Silverlight emerged. This white paper is intended to help technology decision makers come to an informed choice when faced with this difficult decision. It's Day 1 of the Mix 11 conference here in Las Vegas. I work for the Web Platform and Tools (that's ASP.NET, IIS, IIS Media, etc) group and I did the Web Platform demos for Scott Guthrie's part of the keynote. A lot of people in Dev and QA worked hard all year long to make some fun and cool products and as the designated "talking head," I had just 16 minutes to make all of them (people + products) look good. I hope I did them all justice. We built a backend and a front end for Rob and my sie http://www... (more)

IE10 Platform Preview 1, available for download today is the first step in delivering the next wave of progress in native HTML5 support. We built IE9 from the ground up for HTML5 and for Windows to deliver the most native HTML5 experience and the best Web experience on Windows. IE10 continues on IE9’s path, directly using what Windows provides and avoiding abstractions, layers, and librar... (more)

This is my first attempt at creating HTML5 pages. VS 2010 allows working with HTML5 now (you just need to make a small change after installing SP1). So my Razor view is now a HTML5 page. I call this application - 5Commerce – (an over-simplified) HTML5 ECommerce site. So here’s the flow of the application:home page renders user enters first and last name, chooses a product and the quantity can enter additional instructions for the order place the order user is then taken to another page showing the order... The problem with using stateful connections on an imperfect place as the internet is that connections might drop. The server or an intermediary can drop the connection due to an idle timeout. Even a temporary problem at the server or a local network hiccup might kill your connection. If you aren't prepared to handle these scenarios, you will not be able to fully rely on WebSockets. (more)
