I came across an article on Tutorialzine which demonstrate file drag and drop upload with jQuery and PHP. As a curious reader, I downloaded the sample files and took a look and also get it running on my LINUX VM. It worked like a charm. But I am a Windows user and .NET programmer, the question is how can I do the same in ASP.NET? If someone out there can do something in PHP then I can do that in .NET!! Who said the above line??.....ME!!??.....oh yeah!!! So, to get myself started I used the same downloa... (more)

Something I hadn't noticed until recently is that Wikipedia tries to use the browser's native SVG support to render certain images. For example, if you search for a high resolution image of your country's flag, you will probably end up viewing an SVG. Next to being able to scale to an arbitrary size without suffering data loss, the SVG data format allows images to be far more compact. Basically, SVG is just XML, which also means ... (more)

The need for HTML5 postMessage API

The postMessage API in HTML5 specification is useful for making cross domain calls across frames. This is typically useful for mashups, Web 2.0 sites (e.g., pageflakes.com) where different widgets might need to communicate with each other. Few developers have already started using HTML5 postMessage in their projects, without knowing why they are using. Here are a couple of questions an inquisitive developer might have in mind: How are mashups and rich Web 2.0 applications built even before HTML5 postM... (more)

As the old proverb goes, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. That must be Microsoft’s mantra as it prepares to unveil a new strategy for Windows development at BUILD. It’s hard to fathom that only four years have passed since Microsoft originally introduced Silverlight, but in that short period the world- and Microsoft- have clearly changed. With the rising HTML5 sun on the horizon, Microsoft is signaling a new dawn to its legion of developers. Microsoft overstepped with Silverlight and HTML5 is the correc... (more)

Can Microsoft ‘fix’ JavaScript and make HTML5 applications viable? | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

Microsoft’s recent change in stance over Silverlight, promoting HTML5 as “the only true cross-platform solution for everything”, seems to have sidelined Silverlight as a niche framework. This has understandably caused a great deal of upset and confusion in the .NET development community. Despite this, Microsoft are remaining steadfast and tight-lipped about their vision for tighter integration of HTML5 into Windows 8 (and as a result just how side-lined Silverlight will be), until the BUILD conference ne... HTML5 is a collect of individual features, that currently are either supported or not by the current array of browsers. The best approach I’ve found at this time, is to write for HTML5 and use other tools to downgrade graceful. The following are some detection techniques that are in use today: Input Types: HTML5 defines over a dozen new input types for use in web forms. For determining which of these new form elements is supported use the following code, per element (yes I know, that’s a pain in the as... (more)
