XNA for Silverlight developers: Part 11 - Tombstoning

published 727 days, 5 hours, 43 minutes ago posted by KMilKMil 730 days, 1 hour, 27 minutes ago
Saturday, May 28, 2011 9:16:40 AM GMT Wednesday, May 25, 2011 1:33:20 PM GMT
An often discussed topic on Windows Phone 7 is that of “tombstoning”, which describes the process of your application being suspended and removed from the running processes (think hibernate) to free resources on the phone. The application can be “revived” later when the user navigates back to it. It’s the developer’s responsibility to create a user experience that gives the appearance of a seamless transition between applications even when tombstoning happens. For games, the basic concept is the same as ... (more)

XNA for Silverlight developers: Part 10 - UI Elements and Menus

published 757 days, 5 hours, 27 minutes ago posted by KMilKMil 758 days, 2 hours, 15 minutes ago
Thursday, April 28, 2011 9:32:47 AM GMT Wednesday, April 27, 2011 12:45:02 PM GMT
Games inherently have a different UI and user experience concept compared to business applications. Where you scroll through endless lists of items and enter data in greyish forms on one side, you use a game pad or touch input to control a character through a thrilling fantasy world on the other side. In some situations however, you suddenly find yourself to be in need of all these boring controls of normal desktop applications for your game too. Whenever you want to create a menu or request certain data... (more)

XNA for Silverlight developers: Part 7 - Collision detection

Detection of and reaction to collisions is a very fundamental element in games. As soon as it has moving components of some sort, it is likely that collisions are of concern. For example, the player character may collide with the scenery of the game. The player may also collide with other characters (enemies, monsters etc.), and of course many games work with projectiles that can hit various other parts on the game screen. But what exactly are collisions in a game, and what are good ways to detect and ha... (more)

Last time we learned about touch input and gestures, which probably is the first choice for user input in most games on the phone. However, the hardware of Windows Phone 7 devices offer more possibilities in the form of additional sensors that can be used for input, in particular the accelerometer. (more)

For Silverlight developers who want to delve into XNA, the hard part is not learning the new set of classes in the library, but the fundamental difference in programming style for some parts of XNA compared to Silverlight. Especially when you have no experience in game programming, you might find some things confusing or even illogical. In the first part of this article, I want to give an overview and explanation of the biggest differences. (more)

It looks like the MSDN team has arranged some deep dives into Windows Phone development across the country. I am sure that for Microsoft developers Windows Phone 7 represents a new opportunity to get out in the marketplace with your XAML skills and get recognized (paid) for your work! It has been exciting to see a lot of interest from Silverlight developers in Windows Phone 7. (more)

Handling picture orientation in CameraCaptureTask in Windows Phone 7 - Tim Heuer

I was spelunking around playing with Silverlight in Windows Phone 7 and specifically the CameraCaptureTask. The “tasks” are APIs that allow you to interact with phone-specific functionality like the camera, picture picker, phone dialer, etc. A whole list of the available tasks in the Microsoft.Phone.Tasks namespace can be found in the developer documentation. I was basically creating a simple application that would allow you to choose (PhotoChooserTask) or take a picture (CameraCaptureTask) and then d... (more)

Steps to upgrade an XACT project so it can be used with XNA Game Studio 4.0 - Aaron Stebner

If you have an XNA Game Studio 3.1 project that includes an XACT audio project and plan to upgrade it to XNA Game Studio 4.0, there is an additional manual step you must take to upgrade your XACT project to the newer XACT file format required by XNA Game Studio 4.0. We updated the XACT tools used by XNA Game Studio 4.0 at the last-minute due to an issue that we discovered shortly before shipping. Unfortunately, we did not have time to add information about how to upgrade XACT projects to the XNA Game S... (more)

DirectX 10 in XNA 4.0

Unfortunately, XNA has a limitation that it works only with DirectX 9. I love the framework but this limitation really annoys me. Mainly because limit the use to Shader Model 3.0. This post shows a library, called MachinaAurum.Xna.SlimDx that ends with this limitation and allows everyone to use DirectX 10 (or DirectX 11 or OpenGL) in XNA. It is NOT a rewrite of the XNA library as MonoXNA. It uses all the code base of XNA but "hacked" to use other graphical devices. (more)
