With all the Windows 8/Metro/WinRT hype on the internet today, I decided it was time for a quick tip concerning the XAML escape sequence and the good old navigation framework present in Silverlight 4 and Silverlight 5. I think that the dust has cleared after the Build Windows conference which took place two weeks ago. Since then blog posts started to show up talking about Metro style apps, WinRT, its impact on current skills, etc. Also, Microsoft released public preview of Windows 8, so it is about a good time to give it a try. (...) In this post, I want to show you what it takes to build simple yet functional WinRT component in native C++, and also will talk why you would do that. But before we jump right to the code,... Visual Studio 2011 then comes with templates for different types of applications: basic Application, Grid Application and Split Application. Each one helps you create application for windows 8 with the metro style. In this post we are going to explore in details a first type of application template: the Grid Application. (more)

Windows 8 brings a style of applications familiar to us using Windows Phone known as Metro. Although Metro Windows Phone apps were built in Silverlight, many predicted the demise of Silverlight since early previews of Windows 8 focused solely on HTML5 support. The keynote of the BUILD conference dispelled this notion by presenting us a full picture of the applications supported in Windows 8. Windows 8 supports applications that run on Windows 7. It also supports the new style of applications even usin... (more)

Taking a look at how to use and harness the power of Value Converters. A Value Converter (IValueConverter) allows for you to perform custom logic during Bind time in XAML based applications. With a value converter you can implement pretty much any type of complex logic you want (bool to visibility, changing styles, etc) at runtime and have this logic extracted away in a stand alone class. Sometimes you need to set property on controls from the code and then you realize that this is not like in XAML: these are not strings? No, they are not! This is because the XAML processor convert the string to the correct type when it process the XAML. In this post we’ll see how to reproduce the same behavior from the code: a little snippet which can help you someday ! (more)
