I have been playing with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview since the day it was released. It is my primary operating system at nights and weekends. Since I have been investing a lot of time in Windows 8, I thought I’d share 10 things that I certainly didn’t know about Windows 8 at first. This list should be helpful for someone new to Windows 8, but a power-user may learn a thing or two as well. (more)

In preview version of Windows 8, there is no way to directly access to Relation Database (SQL Server, SQLCE) in Metro style application, we can use local storage instead. But all we know that, accessing XML take times and why we have to build from scratch when we have a lot of Local relational database out there, such as VistaDb, Sqlite, SqlCE. Fortunately, there one opensource library that will help us to access to sqlite called sqlite-winrt on Codeplex. Sqlite-winrt will help us to create and access sq... (more)

Taking a look at the Windows Simulator in Visual Studio 11Dec 212011Introduction Today, we are going to take a look at the Windows Simulator which ships with Visual Studio 11 and is used to debug Metro Style apps for Windows 8. I think it is important to learn about the features available in the simulator where we can  better understand the way our Metro applications behave. It is also beneficial for those of us without access to a touch-screen monitor. Before we start, you can check out all of my Win... (more)

WinRT Transitions – Creating Fast and Fluid Metro UIs | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in .NET

This blog post looks at the new concept of ‘transitions’ that WinRT, within Windows 8, introduces. This concept makes it very easy for you to create a fluid and interactive UI without going anywhere near storyboards! I have to admit it, I am a big fan of the Metro Design Language; the clean chrome-free graphics, combined with typography inspired by signage and designed for maximum legibility, has given Windows Phone 7 an instantly recognisable style. However, whilst Silvelight applications developed for... (more)

I think that the dust has cleared after the Build Windows conference which took place two weeks ago. Since then blog posts started to show up talking about Metro style apps, WinRT, its impact on current skills, etc. Also, Microsoft released public preview of Windows 8, so it is about a good time to give it a try. (...) In this post, I want to show you what it takes to build simple yet functional WinRT component in native C++, and also will talk why you would do that. But before we jump right to the code,... We will look at how we can enable real time search integration. What do I mean by Real Time Search integration? When building a Metro Application you have the ability to not only handle unprovoked search queries from the operating system, but you also have the ability to hook into the search screen (seen below) but you also have the ability listen to various events that the Search Panel offers. Windows 8: What's New? Got back from Build conference. Since I expect many people will ask me "So, what's new?" and since the answer is rather complex, I figured I should try to write a post about it, so here goes…  General InformationWindows 7 sold (i.e. legal copies) over 450,000,000 copies since it was released. Windows 7 bypassed Windows XP in world usage. Windows 8 will be used primary for tablets and other touch-based devices. Windows 8 can run on Intel-based processors or ARM-based processors.... (more)

Welcome to Zombieland, the Metro Style Land of WinRT and the Undead

Silverlight is dead! WPF is dead! .NET is dead! Hey, they didn't talk about SharePoint or SQL Server at the BUILD conference, those must be dead too. Welcome our new Metro-id overlords! We read such FUD everywhere these days. Actually none of these technologies are dead for the next several years! And you'll probably agree if you know the fasts and not the FUD. So here are my thoughts based only on the facts I got from watching BUILD sessions, reading posts that stick to the facts and not listening to ... Windows 8 brings a style of applications familiar to us using Windows Phone known as Metro. Although Metro Windows Phone apps were built in Silverlight, many predicted the demise of Silverlight since early previews of Windows 8 focused solely on HTML5 support. The keynote of the BUILD conference dispelled this notion by presenting us a full picture of the applications supported in Windows 8. Windows 8 supports applications that run on Windows 7. It also supports the new style of applications even usin... (more)
