At the recent At the Movies Event put on by ObjectSharp, I demonstrated how to automate deployment of Windows Azure Applications in a TFS Build using a custom TFS Workflow Activity. Automated Deployment to Windows Azure is useful functionality as it replaces a rather tedious repetitive task from our daily routine. There are a number of ways to automate the Deployment Process to Windows Azure. In this entry I’ll outline how you can use TFS Builds or Powershell to Automate Windows Azure Deployments... (more)

TFS Build Service Dependencies - Bryan Group

Anyone who has had to deal with services failing to start (i.e. logon permissions, setting recovery responses [run a program], verifiying dependencies, etc.) knows what a real PITA it can be to track down the culprit of the failure. Having said that I recently had an issue with the "Visual Studio Team Foundation Build Service Host" service. A message box that stated “Cannot start service TFSBuildServiceHost on computer ‘contoso.na.microsoft.net'. (The dependency service or group failed to start)” was pro... (more)

Don’t Close Work Items with Remaining Hours

Project management doesn’t seem to like it when they generate reports from Team Foundation Server and see tons of hours remaining for work that should have already be completed. In my organization, it’s not due to lazy developers not completing their tasks, but people tend to forget to zero out the remaining hours in their tasks before closing it. Luckily, there’s a way to fix that. Open up a command prompt and change directories to %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE. Then run the f... (more)

Known Issues with the Backup/Restore Power Tool - Brian Harry

The Backup/Restore Power Tool we shipped in the most recent Power Tools release was an ambitious project. It’s one of the larger and more involved Power Tools we’ve ever shipped. We knew that despite the fact that we did a fair amount of testing and MVP pre-viewing, it would inevitably ship with some undiscovered issues. It’s been out there long enough and enough people have tried it that I think we are getting to critical mass in terms of identifying the issues that people are likely to hit. Below I... (more)

One of the most contentious tasks a software development team faces during the course of its products’ lifecycles is triaging bugs. Deciding the relative level of importance of any given bug—and consequently determining the chance that that bug might not be fixed at all in time for release—is a serious matter to everyone involved in the product’s development... Working with CodePlex. How to save password for project?

I want to make public one small project on CodePlex. Everybody knows that you can work with CodePlex like with TFS client and with SVN client as well. But really I can’t work with it from SVN client. When I tried to add some binary file (it was dll) I got the error “Server sent unexpected return value (200 OK) in response to PUT request for …”. How to solve this problem I don’t know, I found thread at CodePlex's discussions Can't commit binary files using TortoiseSVN, but last message was at past year. O... (more)

Update on the TFS Upgrade Fix - bharry's WebLog

Friday, August 13, 2010 11:04:45 AM GMT Thursday, August 12, 2010 10:33:27 PM GMT
A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about a moderately rare problem with upgrading from TFS 2005/2008 to TFS 20010. Although the number of people affected is modest, the severity of the issue is bad enough that we decided to re-release all TFS images so that the upgrade fix is automatically included and no one who downloads new images will get “bitten” by missing the step to install the patch.... There’s some exciting news about Visual Studio Lab Management today. You may recall that when we released VS/TFS 2010, we declared the Lab Management capability to be “Release Candidate” quality rather then “Released” quality. I’ve mentioned before that the reason for this was that we just hadn’t gotten enough customer feedback to feel really confident that it was 100% ready for prime time. In truth, it really wasn’t usable in Beta 1. In Beta 2, it wasn’t bad but it relied on adoption of TFS and the ... (more)

Deploying an Azure Project using TFS 2010

So, one of the biggest pains in any development is deployment. And when it comes to Azure, it is easy to deploy, but still is a very manual process. Also you need to deploy from your local Visual Studio which can be very problematic. So after going through this pain more than once, actually more like 30+ times, I got off of my butt and figured out how to deploy to azure from TFS 2010. (more)

We have just released a CTP demonstrating integration between Team Foundation Server 2010 and Project Server 2010 (the final product will also support Project Server 2007 but the CTP is 2010 only). This CTP is provided as a Virtual Machine and is not intended to be used in a production environment. The integration work is not yet complete but there’s enough that it’s very much worth it for us to get some feedback. I think there’s a few months of development work left to be done and then we’ll ship a B... (more)

TFS 2010 Upgrade Issue - Brian Harry

published 1058 days, 18 hours, 7 minutes ago posted by impaimpa 1059 days, 16 hours, 49 minutes ago
Sunday, June 27, 2010 11:50:38 AM GMT Saturday, June 26, 2010 1:08:40 PM GMT
We have discovered a potentially serious issue that can affect upgrades from TFS 2005 or TFS 2008 to TFS 2010. The issue is triggered by a specific pattern of labels, renames, deletes and/or branches that existed before the upgrade. Once the upgrade is complete the contents of the affected labels could be incorrect. Also some internal merge tracking data could be incorrect, resulting in the need to reapply previous merges. Under no circumstance will it cause the contents of any source code to be modi... (more)
