A major part of any SOA implementation is the ability to return multiple data formats and while SOAP still plays a major role in SOA, the need for RSS syndication, JSON and plain XML may require you to add new functionality and steer away from traditional WCF RPC calls. With OData enabled services you can expend the flexibility of your system, but, what about a pain old XML read feed? There is no need to use the overhead of WCF Data Services or RIA OData publish points. Here is a simple class I use along... (more)

As our team was starting to transform our parts of the Azure Services Platform from a CTP ‘labs’ service exploring features into a full-on commercial service, it started to dawn on us that we had set ourselves up for writing a bunch of ‘enterprise apps’. This post is about one of the cloud architecture patterns we developed in the process. (more)

Couple of weeks ago I got a paper copy of book Pablo Cibraro, Kurt Claeys, Fabio Cozzolino, Johann Grabner - Professional WCF 4: Windows Communication Foundation with .NET 4. This book has not a lot of pages, just about 400. Really, I don’t remember when I saw so thin book about some technology. But maybe this book has not a lot pages, but a lot of interesting themes. First chapter is patterns and principles of SOA applications. This is the best chapter in this book. When I was reading this chapter I sa... (more)

David Sprott explains how we're facing a sea change in the world of SOA - from a vendor led initiative in the last decade, to one that's driven by economic imperative. Companies can no longer afford bloat and huge costs, and so the next decade will bring optimization, innovation - and a shift to the cloud. David examines how SOA can help with all of these goals (more)

You’re interested in web application scalability and availability, right? Of course you are! Well, you’re in luck because Udi Dahan – enterprise development expert, SOA specialist and author of NServiceBus – joins the guys on this week’s episode of Herding Code. Jon kicks off the show by asking Udi if one can run a high-availability and high-scalability site (like stackoverflow.com) on two servers with ASP.NET? Udi asks “how high is high” and talks about the importance of defining the scope of the ... (more)

In late October of 2009, seventeen luminaries of the service oriented architecture community came together to debate and hash out a document known as the SOA Manifesto. This paper establishes what was missing amongst the hype: clarity and direction. SOA prioritizes: Business value over technical strategy Strategic goals over project-specific benefits Intrinsic interoperability over custom integration Shared services over specific-purpose implementations Flexibility over ...
