A blog post from Mindscape about the development experience of creating the Web Workbench product for Sass, Less and CoffeeScript in Visual Studio 2010. Like most .NET projects, it contains a fair chunk of C#. But quite a bit of the core is written in F#, and it also invokes a large amount of external Ruby and JavaScript code. While using all these languages definitely made it far easier to develop the product, it did also throw up a few challenges and surprises. This post looks at those challenges and s... (more)

How to: Create a Recursive Ruby Script to replace File/Directory Names and File Contents Over this past weekend I began templating a project structure that we use at my day/evening/night job to allow developers to simply execute a script and provide a few parameters to initialize a new development project (including build script, fxcop analysis, unit testing, visual studio projects, etc.).  I didn’t think this would take that long despite being relatively new to the Ruby worl... This is a continuation of my previous post. In this post, I will do a side by side comparison of Microsoft WebMatrix/WebPage with Ruby Sinatra. The reason I picked Sinatra because both Sinatra and WebMatrix can be used to develop web sites with very minimal effort. A quick reference for equivalent methods/approaches. I am learning RoR for a new project that requires the ability to truly run cross-platform (don't even say Mono...). That said, I love .net, but Ruby on Rails is a fantastic MVC framework. I am learning a lot about MVC programming in general and here is my contribution to others trying to learn RoR in my situation. Last night as I was talking with Danny Diaz about the importants of good programming language documentation.  It occurred to me that the level of effort a company puts into its documentation is a direct reflection on how it sees the developer in relation to its products.  If there is a lot of thought, love, and detail put into the documentation the company most likely cares very much about the developers experience from cradle to grave.  If the documentation is haphazardly put together and no common UIX ... Ever since the ADO.NET team started development on Astoria (pre-release), I have loved the concept.  Since its release (it was called ADO.NET Data Services and is now WCF Data Services), I’ve used it a ton (you may remember the example from this post).  Back at MIX10, Microsoft announced a commitment to the Open Data Protocol (OData).  WCF Data Services enables you to create services that use OData to expose and consume data, both with .NET 4 and .NET 3.5 SP1.  OData services are very powerful and there ... Arguably, one of the most powerful features of UppercuT (UC) is the ability to extend any step of the build process with a pre, post, or replace hook. This customization is done in a separate location from the build so you can upgrade without wondering if you broke the build. There is a hook before each step of the build has run. There is a hook after. And back to power again, there is a replacement hook. If you don’t like what the step i... (more)
