In this article, you will see how to define multiple modules that can communicate with each other through a combination of CompositeCommands and Prism events. CompositeCommands let you have handlers registered or unregistered in a loosely coupled fashion, and allows you to have multiple handlers (child commands) that will be used by the CompositeCommand. Prism events are for situations that are not necessarily an action->reaction kind of set up where enablement and disablement is needed. You simply defin... (more)

Modularity is one of the primary concern when working with a big projects. Most of us think of how we can implement our application that could be reusable across more than one applications. Patterns and Practices Team puts forward the notion of modularity with the help of Unity and Prism which most importantly focus on WPF and Silverlight applications. Being a WPF developer, it would be nice to take this apart and explain you a bit of how you can implement your application using Prism. Before you beg... (more)

When you are developing Silverlight applications following the MVVM pattern, you will eventually run into the fact that you’ll have to create a base class for your viewmodel classes. This post will show how to create a useful base class for your viewmodel classes and also how to create a base class for your view classes, which a lot of developers don’t do. In the end, I will show how to wire everything up. (more)

I’ve also made some screencast videos around the Managed Extensibility Framework in Silverlight. Not so long ago, the PRISM folks announced that they would be integrating MEF into PRISM with the forthcoming V4 and so I thought it would be good to take a look at what’s going on with PRISM 4 by taking the latest drop from CodePlex ( the August drop ).I also noticed that John had recently done ... Over the last week, Matias and I took some time to work on something a Prism Training Kit. We figured out that was one of the things that would be useful to learn Prism. Therefore, we decided to create a set of Hands on Labs that cover the basic topics addressed by Prism (if you can’t wait to download the TK, go here). As always your feedback is really appreciated, and we hope you find it useful. This Training Kit contains 5 Hands-On-Labs that cover the most important concepts of Prism v2. Each Lab inc... (more)

As you might already read in Bob’s blog (if you haven’t I recommend you to add him to your RSS), Prism 2.2 has been released. As I explained in my previous post, this is an intermediate version until Prism 4.0 gets here and is mainly oriented to allow development in Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4, without the need of a manual migration from your side. Except from the project linker, which will be available soon in Visual Studio Gallery, all the features that were there for 2.1 version are back. So... (more)

A lot of people have been talking about the Reactive Extensions for .NET, a flash new library from Devlabs which lets you do LINQ to .NET events just like you can with collections. My team at work has started using it pretty heavily, and today I wrote an adapter that allows you to use Rx over events published on the event aggregator in a Prism/Composite WPF application. (more)
