No one wants downtime. In this age of Web 2.0 (or even more), the usage of internet based applications has been redefined. People tend to engage themselves in much more volume than ever before, making it even harder for infrastructure guys to keep up the servers in full health. This post tells about 8 pain-points of traditional web server systems. (more)

I'm definitely a software person. I took EE in school and made an LED class, then a small computer like everyone else, and I know my volts and my amps for the most part, but that's about it. The limits of my skills are somewhere around adding an LED and some resistors to leech power off a USB adapter (which I recently did while working on the Hanselcade retro arcade build).I look at hardware guys like Clint Rutkas in awe. I mean, seriously, who builds a T-shirt cannon from scratch for fun? AmazingC... (more)

Last night, I (with help from you all) did a prototype bench build of the Ultimate Dev Machine 2.0. I made some dumb mistakes (like forgetting to remove the plastic from the bottom of the heat sink; glad I remembered before I powered it up), but it went reasonably well.HighlightsBunch of interested folks on ustream, all watching progress andhelping out. That was awesome. Thanks to everyone who dropped in!Installed Windows 7 Ultimat... (more)

As a reminder, if you're just turning in, here's our glossary: WEI - Windows Experience Index. How fast is your machine? If you say "I've got a WEI 6.0" you've got a good machine, for example. RFC - Request for Comments. This is crowdsourcing. I want to know what YOU think we need to do to make a machine that is so fast that it'll max out at WEI 7.9 and be a GOM. GOM - God's Own Machine. If the Good Lord had a computer, it'd be a 7.9. We want to build that machine. There have been two posts so far:... (more)

Now that Visual Studio 2010 has shipped, people are asking about preferred hardware configurations. Customers want to know how to take advantage of all the cool new features that we have packed into this release. We have published minimum hardware and software requirements, of course. You can install and run Visual Studio 2010 on almost any machine running 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 with at least 1 GB of RAM. (We recommend at least 2 GB of RAM on a 64-bit flavor of the... (more)

Sedentary Scott chats with Fit John Lam about the science of fitness. If you're a coder you you use huge amounts of data and statistics to plan your next move, why not do the same when working out? John talks about the software and hardware folks use to measure not just where they ran and how far, but also their Watts per Kilo of body weight! (more)

My Ultimate Dev Machine 2010 – Reducing Frustration (My New Years Resolution)

Anyone who has worked with me or knows me will understand I have very little patience! This is probably my worst personality trait. I started to think about my day to day frustrations and what I can change and what I can’t. Slow pc’s are an issue, wasting time waiting for a PC to perform an action is one thing that frustrates me enormously ! But I can change this! Buy a faster pc! (To be honest the above is just a justification to make me feel better about spending money on a new dev machine!) (more)
