The video from my webcast, Top 10 Treats in Entity Framework 4 is available on Oreilly’s website: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/e/1517. I just discovered that WebEx saved the chat window from my O’Reilly webcast last month. So I thought I would pick out the quesitons and answer them here although I did answer some of them at the end of the webcast: Q address NOT Address?? Someone noticed that an entity was named address. The pluralization support in the VS2010 EDM Designer does not fix up bad capitali... (more)

Entity Framework’s T4 templates all have a dependency on a file that includes additional specialized methods. If you look at the top of the templates (ENtityObject, POCO or Self-Tracking Entiteis) there is a pointer to a ttinclude file. (more)

Simple Query Results Caching with EF4 Recently I spent some time working with a customer who was working on converting an existing application which had originally been written against an old 4GL database technology to .Net and EF4.  The programming patterns used in the app were a lot different than what we would normally expect from an app written from scratch against the EF.  In one of the typical scenarios, for instance, a single web service call made more than 200 database queries, so you can imagi... POCO Proxies Part 2: Serializing POCO ProxiesPublished 05 January 10 12:35 PM | dpblogs  This is the second of a two part blog series on using POCO proxies in the Entity Framework 4.0. The first post described the capabilities of proxies and details on how they work. Using proxies means your types aren’t exactly as your system expects. This can pose challenges for operations such as serialization where having the right type is critical. This post demonstrates the best practices for using proxies in sc... (more)

Tip 48 – How to host a Data Service in WCF Every wonder if you can host an Astoria Data Service in WCF? Well turns out the answer is yes, in fact once you’ve got your references set up etc it is pretty easy.Step 1 – Setting up your project Here is what my working project looks like: In this example I am using VS 2010 beta 2, but this should work with VS 2008 SP1 too. As you can see I have a Console app with an EF Entity Data Model called ProductsContext and a Data Service called ProductsCatalog.... (more)

N-Tier Methods in Entity Framework 4 – Use with Care : Don't Be Iffy

One of the things I struggled with in n-Tier apps in EFv1 was the options for reconstructing entity state on the server side in order to call SaveChanges when modified data was passed in from the client. The options were to hit the database to get a set of current server values and then apply updates to those or to just attach the incoming data and iterate through each property marking it as modified so that SaveChanges would be able to construct an Update. T4 templates or Text Template Transformation Toolkit is a mean of creating a code generation artifacts which can save a lot of time. This technology is a part of Visual Studio since 2005 but was one of those technologies that were kept in secret by Microsoft. Almost all the code generation stuff that is being used in Visual Studio in technologies such as MVC, Entity Framework,... (more)

Tip 47 – How fix-up can make it hard to change relationships Problem: Take this code: Category oldCategory = ctx.Categories     .Include("Products")     .First(c => c.Name == "Drink"); Category newCategory = new Category {Name = "Beverage"}; foreach(Product product in oldCategory.Products) {     newCategory.Products.Add(product); } Ignore for a second that in this example the solution is probably just to rename the oldCategory "Beverages" - Coming up with real world samples gets hard... EF POCOs and GetObjectStateEntry : Don't Be Iffy

Even when working with POCOs, the EF’s ObjectContext can track the objects using ObjectStateEntry objects just as it does for entities that inherit from EntityObject. I was thinking about ObjectContext.ObjectStateManager.GetObjectStateEntry. This method has two overloads. One takes an entity and the other takes an EntityKey of an entity. Then it returns the ObjectStateEntry being maintained to track that particular entity. In more detail, the signature for the first overload is GetObjectStateEntry(obj... (more)
