Many time we need to change the layout type of any panel present inside the page. This is mainly a designers job but sometime developers need to change them on their requirement. In that case, people need to find out the start and end tag of the panel and change them accordingly. This is little bit a tricky process. In this post, I am going to share you the easy process to switch between different layout types. If you are a designer or using Expression Blend, you are already familiar with it. But for a ... Customized Scrolling in Silverlight using Expression Blend

In some case, we need to customize the Scrolling functionality in Silverlight depending upon the requirement. The default look of ScrollViewer doesn’t give proper UI effect. In such case, you need to create the whole scroll behavior by modifying XAML and writing a bunch of C# code. In this article, I will demonstrate you how to create the above scrolling functionality simply without writing any lines of C# code. You have to use only Expression Blend to create the richness of the Scrolling. Read more t... (more)

Blend Bits 15: The Data Store - Mike Taulty

There’s lots of data features in Blend to provide food for future posts but this post is about the data store that showed up in Blend 4. This is a fairly simple idea and I suspect that I’d use it more in the realm of a SketchFlow application than I would in a real application as I tend to see it as a way for a designer to store something outside of the underlying object model that they’re data-bound to and I’m not sure I’d want that to happen in a real application. Say I’m sketching a simple login scre... (more)

This comes directly from something that I was doing today with Blend. Let’s imagine that I have a UI like this one and I have it set such that when my mouse enters the scene, that little grid at the bottom animates in from the bottom and when my mouse leaves the scene it animates out;I put this together in the simplest way possible. My layout looks like this;and the sneaky thing is that I have 3 rows rather than 2. That bottom row is set to size 0.When the mouse leaves the control, I move t... (more)

Tim wrote a great blog post a while ago about the new JetPack theme for Silverlight that’s available for download along with its friends. You can try them all on the web by clicking on the images below; If I wanted to use these in Blend I can grab the download of the raw assets from the website;and then extract those out somewhere giving me;Then I can launch into Blend, begin a new Silverlight project and add items;and I choose ( from the JetPack theme );because I’m not planning to use... Blend 3 introduced the idea of Triggers, Actions and Behaviors as a way in which a developer can package up functionality for re-use by a designer in a drag-drop manner. The way I think of them in my head;Action – piece of code that does some single thing.Trigger – piece of code that causes some Actions to run at “some point”.Behavior – piece of code that attaches itself to some other object and does something with it. Anything. One of the things that my slightly-too-detailed-obsessed brain struggles t... (more)

My second tip on Blend is to learn a few keyboard shortcuts. It’s not that hard. Honest. I don’t mean that you have to sit down and religiously learn them all. There’s quite a lot and they’re well documented in the help ( Blend Help is good by the way ) and there’s even a menu option to jump straight to them; which drops you out here; Now I’m naturally lazy and so I wasn’t going to sit down and learn all of these but I learnt a few and the ones that I learnt are mostly from the Artboard, Pen tool ... I add a Button to that top left (0,0) grid cell by selecting the button control over on my “Tools” window and then drawing a Button within the grid cell or by just double-clicking in the grid cell then I get a Button; but I also get something that I hadn’t bargained for. Margins.I’m not sure whether there’s a super-smart way around this but I often find in Blend that I’m checking the Layout area of the Properties panel to see whether I’ve end... (more)

I just learning Silverlight, or at least trying to, but I am having the hardest time trying to watch your videos. We 1.5 Mbits here at the office, but 40 people use it... so I am lucky to get 64Kbits for myself. Anyway, I do not know if it is a SilverLight streaming issue or not, but I cannot watch your videos because they will buffer for about 2 to 3 minutes, then play about 5 to 10 seconds of video, then buffer again, then rinse and repeat. I do not have this problem when watch Flash videos o... (more)

You will remember that in the previous post in this small series, we created a new button template with a new appearance and new behavior for the “standard” view states. This button will be used with our form, and the form in turn will (eventually) be prepopulated from a database. It would be very convenient if the button reflected the need for the data to be saved when the user updates any of the fields. The design calls for the button’s border to turn red when the user makes any changes, and to return ... (more)

In this episode of Silverlight TV, Adam Kinney discusses how you can completely customize how a control looks and behaves. Adam explains how all Silverlight controls are lookless and that they can be customized using various templates depending on what you want to achieve. Instead of starting with a simple control like a TextBox, he demonstrates the power of templating using a ListBox and its various templates, including the ItemsPanel, ListBoxItem, Data Template, and more (we joke about the multiple nam... did not include source, and left fleshing out the styles as an exercise… this quick follow-up will provide a link to the full code and a quick walkthrough of the styles I ended up creating. The tricky part is that there is not a single base class for the various controls we’re using (e.g., TextBlock, TextBox etc.) and the based on property requires that the target be either the base style class or a class derived from the base style class. A quick check of the Silverlight .chm file reveals the inheritanc... (more)

This is the first of a multipart series on the Visual State Manager which will cover * Styles * Resources * Templates * Custom Controls * Customizing data validation Let’s start with the form that is used in my Getting Started With Silverlight video: Adding Controls To An Application. That video uses the design surface in Visual Studio 2010, and a subsequent video creates the grid in Xaml. To round things out I’ll create this version in Expression Blend. (more)

This past Tuesday I had dinner with several of the Tampa area Silverlight crew at Champps and then headed over to the Microsoft offices and presented at the Tampa Silverlight User Group (Tampa SLUG). With both Silverlight 4 and Flex 4 you have the ability to completely change the look of a control, without subclassing it, while leaving it's functionality intact. This process is called “Templating” in Silverlight and is called “Skinning” in Flex. With this article I’ll show you how similar both technologies have become, but we’ll also see in which technology templating / skinning is easier. (more)
