This blog post shows just how easy it is to use Google Sky as a tile source for Bing Maps, bringing the universe to Windows Phone 7! Personally I think mapping is one of the most exciting forms of application for mobile devices – the fantastic imagery available from Bing and Google maps, coupled with GPS technology, results in some pretty amazing tools. As a Windows Phone 7 developer, I have spent a fair bit of time poking round the Silverlight Bing Maps APIs. A really cool feature of the Bing Maps co... (more)

After Microsoft launched Bing Maps, there are few things which lead me not to use Google Maps:Bing Maps are more accurate than Google Maps.Bing Maps looks more pretty than Google Maps. And the main reason I am using Bing Maps is because I am a Microsoft fan To locate a place on maps (Bing or Google), the best thing is to get the latitude and longitude of the location, this ensures that the place we are pinning on the map is accurate. But the big question is to where to get the latitude and longitude of ... (more)

#ukfuel – another Twitter / Bing Maps Mashup! | Colin Eberhardt's Adventures in WPF

A few weeks ago I blogged about a Twitter / Bing Maps mashup that I had created for tracking snowfall in the UK via the #uksnow twitter hashtag. Last week I spotted a number of people in the uk who were using a new hashtag #ukfuel for tweeting fuel prices together with a postcode to indicate its geographic location. With a few tweaks I was able to modify my mashup to plot fuel prices instead of snowfall. Click the image below to visit the #ukfuel page and interact with the map: The colour of each fu... (more)

It’s Christmas Eve and time for some fun! A few weeks back I published an article on Reactive Extensions where I created a Bing Maps / Twitter mashup that plotted the geolocation of #uksnow twitter tags. This twitter hashtag was popularised by Ben Marsh and is used by us weather obsessed brits to give a realtime update of snowfall. To use this hashtag tweet #uksnow with your postcode and the amount of snowfall out of ten (e.g. 7/10). The snow has continued to fall in record quantities across the uk, so ... (more)

A week ago a colleague of mine posted an interesting article on parallelism in .NET 4.0 which included a few different libraries for asynchronous / parallel processing. Being a bit of a Linq fan, the Reactive Extensions jumped out at me. With the heavy snow in the UK, I was inspired to have a go at creating a Silverlight version of Ben Marsh’s UKSnow twitter / maps mashup. The application below gives a real-time view of the snow across the UK. To add a snow report to the map, tweet #uksnow with your ... (more)
