Looks like some of the big crowdsourcers want to encourage their members to get skilled up on Windows Azure. This contet looks pretty easy and if there are three netbooks, the odds are pretty good too: http://www.codeproject.com/Competitions/396/Windows-Azure-App-Contest-March-2010.aspx (more)

A while ago, I did a blog post on creating an external facing Azure Worker Role endpoint, listening for incoming TCP connections. After doing that post, I had the idea of building a Windows Azure FTP server that served as a bridge to blob storage. Lack of time, other things to do, you name it: I did not work on that idea. Until now, that is. (more)

The aim of this article is to explain the basics of WCF in a manner as simple as possible. It is assumed that the reader doesn’t know anything about WCF or .NET 3.0, however he/she is expected to know .NET 2.0 and/or simple facts like what is a web service. While writing this article (or any other) I always try to avoid difficult technical words, which may confuse the reader. I have tried to put it in as simple words as possible. It’s been a few years since the Web industry praised the advent of AJAX as the beginning of a new era of programming prosperity, and now a powerful set of programming tools is finally available to Web developers: the ASP.NET Ajax Library and WCF Data Services. Developers can stop relying on the browser as a distinct runtime environment and perform from the Web a number of tricks that were previously only possible through smart clients. (more)

“Edit WCF Configuration” is missing from Visual Studio 2008 context menu So this morning I format a laptop and install a fresh copy of Visual Studio 2008. I then try to edit the Web.Config using Edit WCF Configuration, but wait it’s missing! What the hell? So I look around in VS menus and find Tools -> WCF Service Configurator Editor. I clicked it did not look like what I was looking for… But in fact I was in luck because after trying to right-click on Web.Config again the Edit WCF Configuration was ba... (more)

In this article I'm going to give you a simple, step-by-step overview of how to create a Windows 2008 server image in Amazon's Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) infrastructure. Now I must admit I'd rather have found a good tutorial on The Internets or even in a book. Feel free to send me any I missed. My experience is they are either dated or about Linux and so on... First, briefly why does one care about EC2? Well maybe you are buying into the whole cloud computing story which lets you cheaply out-source... (more)

Tip 52 – How to re-use Types with the Data Services client By default when you add a Data Service Service Reference you get automatic code-generation, which produces a strongly typed DataServiceContext and classes for all your ResourceTypes. You can have a look at this generated code if you ‘show all files’ in your project: And then expand your Data Service Reference, it’s dependant Reference.datasvcmap and open up the Reference.cs file: Step 1 – Turn off Code-Gen If however you want to re-use s... Creating a Data Service Provider – Part 6 – Query Interactions Whenever I find myself implementing a series of interfaces to plug into a framework or server, I always find myself wondering how the server will call my implementations. For me this is about forming a mental model to simplify how I think about what I’m doing. In fact as I’ve been doing this DSP series I’ve come up with a sort of mental model for how Queries are handled in a Data Service. Here is some PSEUDO CODE that captures my mental... (more)

How to Change .NET Configuration Files at Runtime (including for WCF) One of the most common issues people run into with WCF configuration, and .NET applications in general, is that configuration files appear to be fixed. You only have one configuration file for an executable, and you can’t use different configuration files as your exe.config while the application is running. Of course, you can always shut down the application, change the configuration, and then restart it with the new configuration fil... (more)
